Stop blaming PoC for Cali's Prop 8
Not even two days later, and people are blaming Prop 8's passing on PoC.
Other people are saying it, and since I can't say it well, have their links. (continued here...)
My 2 cents

Date: 2008-11-07 07:24 pm (UTC)Not everything that is attributed is necessarily blamed.
BTW, in case you didn't go back to it, I was pretty honked off by your accusation of uncritical thinking in my journal the other day. I found it pretty insulting, and I believe that an apology, or at least an excuse, would not be inappropriate.

Date: 2008-11-07 11:13 pm (UTC)On your point here, I also agree - it's starting to appear that the No on 8 campaign really might have some flaws that you'd think a statewide campaign would want to work on (i.e. accounts of volunteers being told by No on 8 not to canvas outside mostly GLBT+ neighborhoods). A little problematic to me... but cleaning up after this mess and getting to a place where everyone's rights can be honored is clearly more important. How fast that happens remains to be seen...

Date: 2008-11-07 11:29 pm (UTC)I think it's more than unfortunate that statistically-significant phenomena so easily and often get morphed into generalizations about the populations, especially when skin color has been so tied with such horrific acts of cruelty and degradation for so long.
Even though in my journal here I celebrate the symbolism of people of all colors coming together to say, "Without respect to skin color, this is our choice," I don't kid myself by thinking that "racial" barriers will tumble quickly... *sigh*
Ohio didn't have any BGLTQ issues on the ballot this time, but we did defeat a gambling-casino issue, many of us because it would have altered the state constitution, not because it was about gambling. (That was my prime motivation, though I confess that I disbelieve the claims that casinos bring more good than harm to locales.) It was particularly Machiavellian of the Prop 8 supporters to go the constitutional route, damn their putrid little hearts

Date: 2008-11-07 11:45 pm (UTC)And yes, you're right, it was a failure of the No on 8 campaign and Queers in general, but then the last twelve years of BushCo is because of the failure of the American people to participate in democracy and take their Declaration of Independence seriously.
